Radu Abbot’s Unique US Open Experience: A Family Affair and a Clash with Novak Djokovic

Moldovan tennis player Radu Albot is set for a memorable experience at the 2023 US Open, facing 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic in the first round. After successfully navigating the qualifying rounds, Albot’s wife, Doina, discovered that her husband had drawn one of the toughest opponents in the tournament — Djokovic, the second seed. While many would see this as a daunting challenge, Albot is embracing the opportunity with optimism.

“This will be my first time playing Djokovic, and I’m looking forward to it,” Albot shared. Although he has practiced with legends like Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, he has never faced Djokovic on the court. The 34-year-old Moldovan is relishing the chance to compete against one of the greatest players of all time, especially on the iconic stage of Arthur Ashe Stadium.

What makes this experience even more special for Albot is the presence of his family. His wife and young daughter, Adeline, have accompanied him to New York, and Adeline even had the chance to visit the stadium where her father will soon play. At just four years old, Adeline has already met several tennis stars, including Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and even the legendary Billie Jean King.

“For me, seeing my wife and daughter in the stands is something special,” Albot said. “Having an extra little supporter in your team is really interesting, and it adds a unique element to this experience.”

Albot is no stranger to tough competition, having faced Federer twice, including a memorable three-set battle at the Miami Open in 2018. He knows the challenge ahead is immense, but he remains focused on giving his best effort. “I’m going on the court with the mentality to win,” Albot explained. “I’m not just hoping to take a set or a game. I’m going to compete, and if I play well, I’ll be happy with that.”

Novak Djokovic

Albot acknowledges that Djokovic is a more complex player than most, with exceptional physical attributes, movement, and shot-making abilities. The Moldovan knows that facing Djokovic in a best-of-five format will require mental toughness and adaptability. However, his past experiences against top players like Federer and Andy Murray will undoubtedly help him prepare for this monumental challenge.

A decade ago, Albot made his Grand Slam main draw debut at the US Open, and now, ten years later, he returns to the tournament with pride, representing Moldova on one of the sport’s biggest stages. “I’m very proud to represent my country,” Albot said. “Even though Moldova is a small European country that not many people know about, I want everyone to see that anything is possible, no matter where you come from.”

As Albot steps onto the court against Djokovic on Opening Night, he carries with him the hopes of his country, and his family, and the belief that with determination, even the most daunting challenges can be overcome.
