Pitt Basketball Welcomes New Graduate Managers
On Wednesday afternoon, University of Pittsburgh head coach Jeff Capel announced the addition of former players KJ Marshall and Matt Watson to the Panthers’ coaching staff as graduate managers. Both Marshall and Watson, 2024 graduates, will play crucial roles in assisting with player and team development.
KJ Marshall’s Journey to the Coaching Staff
KJ Marshall, who played three seasons for Pitt, appeared in 25 games after previous stints at Mars Hill University and Garden City Community College. Known for his relentless energy and commitment, Marshall became a valuable reserve throughout his college career. His hard work and intensity during practice were recognized as key in preparing the scouting team and contributing to game preparation.
As a graduate manager, Marshall will help the coaching staff organize practice schedules, prepare scouting reports, conduct skill drills, and support player development. His deep understanding of the game and work ethic will be vital in shaping the team’s success this season.
Matt Watson’s Expanded Role
Matt Watson, who officially joined Pitt’s men’s basketball program as a graduate manager in July 2024, previously worked as a student manager for four years. Now, his responsibilities have grown to cover the logistical aspects of the program.
During the 2023-24 season, Watson served as the main liaison between coaches, managers, opposing teams, and university personnel. He also collaborated with the Director of Basketball Operations to manage daily program functions. With experience in data analysis, video breakdown using Synergy Sports, and youth basketball camps, Watson brings a versatile skill set to his new role.
Looking Ahead to the 2024-25 Season
Pitt will open the 2024-25 season on Monday, November 4, with a home game against Radford University at the Petersen Events Center. Both Marshall and Watson are set to play key roles in helping the program continue its competitive drive this season. Their dedication and experience, both on and off the court, are expected to make a strong impact on the team’s development.
