Hungary Secures Top Spot in FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2026 Pre-Qualifying Tournament in Rwanda

Hungary clinched the title at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2026 Pre-Qualifying Tournament held in Rwanda, emerging victorious with a 63-47 win over Senegal in the final. This triumph grants Hungary the sole spot available in the upcoming FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup Qualifiers, scheduled for March 2026.

The Hungarian team concluded the tournament with an impressive 4-1 record, demonstrating their strength and resilience throughout the competition. Virag Kiss was a standout performer, leading the team with a game-high 17 points off the bench. Veronika Kanyasi and Bernadett also made significant contributions, each scoring 10 points to support Hungary’s successful campaign. Their performance has bolstered Hungary’s prospects for the 2026 Women’s Basketball World Cup, which will take place in Berlin, Germany.

Hungary’s path to victory was marked by a mix of setbacks and comebacks. Although they suffered a narrow defeat to Senegal (63-61) during the group stage, the team quickly recovered with a series of impressive wins. They secured victories over the Philippines (97-60), Brazil (87-66), and Great Britain (82-59), and avenged their earlier loss by defeating Senegal (63-47) in the final.

Host nation Rwanda had a strong start but fell short of reaching the final. They secured two straight wins against Lebanon and Argentina but lost to Great Britain in their final group match. Rwanda’s campaign ended with a narrow defeat to Senegal (68-65) in the semi-final, leaving them with a 2-2 record.
