Champions Corner: Sabalenka and Pegula Poised for US Open Success

Aryna Sabalenka and Jessica Pegula, both recent WTA 1000 champions, are showcasing remarkable composure as they head into the US Open. Despite their impressive performances, they remain grounded and focused on the challenges ahead.

Pegula, who began the North American hard-court season ranked 20th in the PIF Race to the WTA Finals, has surged with remarkable form. In just 12 days, the 30-year-old American won nine matches across Toronto and Cincinnati. Her triumph at the National Bank Open in Toronto marked her third WTA 1000 title, and her performance in Cincinnati earned her a place in the final. Although she was defeated by the formidable Sabalenka in Cincinnati, Pegula’s recent results have positioned her firmly in the Top 8 of the PIF Race to the WTA Finals standings. This achievement has brought a sense of calm, alleviating the stress of defending points from the previous year. “I don’t stress about defending points,” Pegula noted, emphasizing her renewed confidence and positive outlook as she prepares for the US Open.

Sabalenka, meanwhile, ended a significant title drought with a commanding win in Cincinnati. She did not drop a set throughout the tournament and notably defeated world No.1 Iga Swiatek in the semifinals with a decisive 6-3, 6-3 victory. Sabalenka’s performance demonstrated her unwavering focus and control, reminiscent of her first Australian Open triumph. Reflecting on her recent matches, Sabalenka acknowledged the importance of maintaining emotional control. “I realized that I play my best tennis when I am calm and confident,” she said. After struggling with emotional challenges in previous US Open appearances, Sabalenka is determined to stay composed, regardless of match circumstances.

Monterrey Open

Both Sabalenka and Pegula, having showcased their peak form in Toronto and Cincinnati, are now preparing for the US Open. They recognize the need to manage their anxiety and stress as they aim to translate their recent successes into a strong performance at the season’s final Grand Slam. As Pegula remarked, the challenge of maintaining high standards in a Grand Slam setting adds a new layer of pressure, but both champions are poised to navigate it with calm and confidence.
